Flappybird was a mobile game where you would tap the screen to fly a bird through a series of obstacles. It was insanely hard and I only made it to 7. It also made $50,000/day in ad revenue… and the owner took it off the store. WHY? We’ll never know but what can we learn from Flappybird that we can apply to our own marketing campaigns?
1. Keep it SIMPLE & provide value.
It took all of 2 seconds to understand how to play Flappybird. It was straight forward and delivered entertainment value for minimal investment. How does this apply to ads? Well, make your ad insanely easy to read and then demonstrate value in your landing page. Maybe build a list via your lander and send these people FREE e-books or articles on how to be more successful in dating (if you’re running a dating offer). People will buy things when they perceive that the value gained is more than the cost required OR when they trust the person selling. So do both.
2. Draw “Inspiration”
This isn’t the first game to appear that required you to guide your hero through obstacles. The most obvious “inspiration” is Helicopter Game. And the ARTWORK, holy geez this guy was “INSPIRED” big time from the Mario series. For me, it was this INSPIRED Mario artwork that got me playing this game, I mean, Mario is associated with a LOT of positive nostalgic feelings for most people that grew up in this generation (maybe that’s where Helicopter Game failed). Point is, draw inspiration from established and successful formulas (But don’t be so lazy that you open yourself up to getting sued!).
3. Be Patient
Flappybirds was released in May 2013 but didn’t really see success until Jan/Feb 2014. It was originally released for iPhone 5, saw no success but he kept updating it for iOS 7. He started getting traction and responded by releasing to Android at the end of January. Would you have given up if you saw no success between May 2013 and Jan 2014? Have you ever killed an ad/landing page/offer too early because you were scared of losing money?
4. Work Your Ass Off.
Flappybirds isn’t the only game this guy made. I believe Flappybird was this guy’s 5th? game, don’t quote me on it but it definitely wasn’t his first. He knew there was money to be made in mobile gaming and that if he worked enough at it, something would stick. Haters would have told him that mobile gaming is too saturated or that he was a small fish in a HUGE pond. Sound familiar? So my advice here is to work your ass off and keep trying. The fact that other people make money online is proof enough that it is possible. Heck, even reading through blog.ads.pof.com, should arm you with enough information to make money on POF! Your first attempt probably won’t be profitable. Your second attempt probably won’t be profitable either. Your third attempt however (armed with the knowledge from the first 2) has a significantly higher chance at succeeding relative to the first 2.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “You never want to fail because you didn’t work hard enough. Muhammad Ali, one of my great heroes, had a great line in the ’70s when he was asked, “How many sit-ups do you do?” He said, “I don’t count my sit-ups. I only start counting when it starts hurting. When I feel pain, that’s when I start counting, because that’s when it really counts.” That’s what makes you a champion. No pain, no gain. But when you’re out there partying, horsing around, someone out there at the same time is working hard. Someone is getting smarter and someone is winning. Just remember that… But if YOU want to win, there is absolutely no way around hard, hard work. Just remember, you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets”.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s never too late to create your own Flappybird. Keep It Simple, Draw Inspiration, Be Patient and Work Your Ass Off.

It’s not uncommon for dating affiliates to use landing pages to increase ROI %. But how many of you are building a list to maximize on every visitor? Nickycakes goes over some basics on how to accomplish this and pushes affiliates to think about LTV (lifetime value) rather than the quick wham bam, thank you ma’am.
Did anyone catch the giant fish display on the opening scene of the Olympics? I’m not saying we slipped Putin a $100 but I’m not saying we didn’t either ;)
I feel kind of slimy for this next tip I’m going to share LOL. OK so it’s no secret that there is a LOT of money being made in the dating vertical on POF. Sometimes, you may find it challenging to come up with new ways to say the same old thing right? Well, here’s an approach I guarantee you’ve never tried.
There are language websites out there designed to help non-English speakers by telling them how to say certain phrases. So one could technically utilize this resource to your advantage right?
Not saying you should but technically, you could. You could sign up and say, “Hi, I am want to date fat girl but do not know what to write. How to say “I want to date fat woman” in non-insult way”
And watch the ad copy suggestions roll in.

Well, I’m back from Affiliate Summit West in Vegas and it was such a good conference!
Even Hulk Hogan came out to this one! I was fortunate enough to watch him cut a promo, talking smack about Hostgator LOL.
2014 is going to be a fantastic year for those who I had the chance to strategize with! Really looking forward to putting plans into action.
Anyway, back to business! I want to discuss the concept of increasing your CPM bid to cheapen your clicks. Basically, increasing your bid so that you deliver ahead of your competitors and decreasing the chance your ad has burned out. I want to give a BIG thank you to an affiliate who has agreed to allow me to display the data of one of their campaigns that clearly shows a minor increase in CPM for a much more profitable campaign.
Basically, the starting CPM for this campaign was $0.31 (bidding $0.01 more than the minimum for banners), got average 0.17% CTR with average CPC of $0.20ish and spend is ~$20/day.
He raised the CPM to $0.37 on Dec 19th and check out the RESULTS!! CTR is now average 0.30% with average CPC of $0.12 and spend is around ~$100/day. He’s now making a LOT more revenue/profit from this campaign for only a very minor increase in CPM bid. This is what happens when you increase your bid and deliver ahead of a large chunk of people.
- Why did he choose $0.37? He wanted to deliver ahead of the people who bid $0.35 (and the people using the 1 penny trick). MOST advertisers on POF will bid in nice, clean numbers… so usually in a multiple of $0.05. I suggested he test out $0.53 next. Why? Because the minimum bid for 3 small ads is 0.16, multiply that by 3 and you get a 0.48.. but then you’ll want to deliver ahead of the 0.51 guys too. The most popular bids for banners is always 0.30, 0.40, 0.50, 0.60.. etc. With diminishing returns as each level has less and less people bidding there. Make sense? BID SMART PEOPLE.
- This ad’s been running for a while now.. Notice any burnout? Nope. The stats were pretty stable since Oct 2013. There’s only 1 ad in the campaign too (running) so a good ad is a good ad! This will die one day but it’s held up for months now but so far, goes against everything logic would dictate LOL.
- The same idea would apply to the small ads. Only thing you’d have to do is duplicate your campaigns and ensure your bids all add up to something that would exceed a popular banner bid.
So, if you haven’t tested your bids in a while, it’s a good time now! I won’t be answering any questions about this campaign as I feel like it was already a very generous share. So best of luck and happy tweaking!

Wow, December is here and we’re in the thick of our busiest (and most lucrative) time of year for advertisers. If you have campaigns that you want to run, get those up. Think of some unique angles that relate to the season and submit those ads. We want to see you kill it!

For most of you, this info will be an old hat, but if you’re committing one of my DEADLY SINS (ie only testing one creative per campaign), it’s important that you watch and implement the steps. I want to see you increase your CTR to levels that would make that someone special proud. If you don’t have someone special, think of your hero.
